How to make your home healthier without lifting a finger!

What’s one thing you can do to make your home healthier this weekend without lifting a finger?

Take your shoes off and leave them by the door before you come in! Or hang them:-)))

Apparently, doing this alone can reduce the amount of dust in your home by more than 50%. And what’s wrong with a bit of dust, you ask? Well, we drag in all sorts of stuff on our shoes like dirt, pesticides, heavy metals, flame retardants, diesel particles, pollen, insects and mould spores - many of which are known allergens and toxicants. Surprisingly it’s not what’s in the dust but the amount of it in your home that matters. Apparently, we shouldn’t be killing the bacteria in the dust with everything we’ve got, but rather trying to reduce their numbers by physically removing dust. In that way, the diversity of microbes in the home environment is preserved, which is essential for a healthy immune system, especially for infants and toddlers who may ingest up to 10 grams of dust per day crawling around the house.

Reducing the dust load in our homes can make a big difference to our health. But, most of the time we are just short for tome when it comes to cleaning or like me, you are a bit slack in that department. There is a simpler solution! Slippers!

When we were growing up, my parents always had a spare pare of slippers by the door. So, in case we had guests they were asked to wear them. Not sure about the hygiene issue (some people might be grossed out by wearing reusable slippers) but I like the idea of having a separate pare of shoes for inside the house. Not only you are not dragging in all those nasties from the street, but it’s kind of like showing your house that you care about it and you respect the people who are cleaning it, don’t you think?

Sure, if you feel inspired to do a bit more, give your home a wipe with a damp microfibre cloth and a vacuum (preferably with a HEPA filter). But it might be just one of those weekends when you want to kick off your shoes, sink into the couch and have a nice glass of red and still know that you are effectively reducing dust by 50%. Now, where do I find a comfortable and ethically made pair of slippers? I am thinking maybe felt... a bit better than wooden :-)))
